Once again, it’s Wussy Wednesday, and this week you can call me a wuss all you want, but I love this stuff.
One of my favorite non-metal bands is The Cardigans. You may not have heard of them, but they’re best known for the song “Lovefool” from Romeo + Juliet in the 1990’s, and if you’ve ever watched old MTV Cribs, you’ve probably also heard “My Favourite Game” from time to time. They’re one of the few bands from my childhood that I still actively listen to and like, so they get brownie points for that, but, The Cardigans aren’t really the most metal band out there… or so they want us to believe.
First Band on the Moon (the album with “Lovefool”) came out in 1996, so I was about 8 or 9 when I got it as a gift for a 100% on a spelling test. At the time, I didn’t really know much about Black Sabbath, so I didn’t know that their cover of “Iron Man” was in fact… a cover. Years later of course, I put the two together. As it may be, it seems that my favorite non-metal Swedish rockers have sort of a penchant for Black Sabbath because they also do a cover of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” on 1995’s Life and a cover of “Changes” at live shows. Not the band you would expect to do such a thing, but the completely non-brutal way they redo these classics is freakin’ AWESOME.
So really, maybe I’m just the wuss this week. Eh, what else is new.
