HANUKKAH CAME A LITTLE EARLY THIS YEAR

I am not a religious person by any means, so you can imagine my Jewish mother’s delight when I told her I attended something called Major League Dreidel last December. The event is one part dreidel tournament (based on how long your spin lasts), and another part metal. That’s right…Jew metal.
A few of my friends are in a band called the Gods of Fire, who are not only the annual musical entertainment at MLD, but they have now completed the most essential Hanukkah album you will ever own (do you own any?) called Hanukkah Gone Metal. And since I’m just that special, the boys have sent me an advance copy.
There are 8 songs on the record. (I see what ya did there..) They give a metal kick to some classics like “Oh Hanukkah” and “Havenu Shalom Alechem,” but have also authored some epic originals like “Eight Days of Victory” and their big hit “Spin for the Blood of Our Elders.” My favorite, by far, is “No Gelt, No Glory.” It’s pumpin’ me up for an MLD victory this year. I intend on kicking some ass.
So…what are you doing this weekend? GoF are playing a show this Saturday night (9/26) here in New York at Arlene’s Grocery (95 Stanton Street). The band goes on at 10 pm sharp and they’re sure to play some new jamz. Jews, non Jews, Mexicans, doesn’t matter…come on out if you can! No one will discriminate. Just make sure to wish guitarist ‘Saucy’ a Happy Birthday, and to gulp down a Maneschewitz or two with Julia and I.
Does this all sound ridiculous to you? Well, it is. But who doesn’t love a good Jew joke? Hanukkah Gone Metal will be available very very soon, but in the meantime, you can hit up Gods of Fire on MySpace and Twitter. And make sure to check out Major League Dreidel at the brand spanking new Brooklyn Knitting Factory in December. We’ll have more on that in the coming months.
L’chaim, or whatever.
