WHO ARE DR. SLAGGLEBERRY??
I’m not usually one to do the whole “album review” thing, but if I think a band could use a push…I’m more than happy to help ‘em out. Since I last wrote about Britain’s Dr. Slaggleberry, I’ve done a little reading on them, and managed to obtain their new EP, The Slagg Factory. So who are these masked math metal men? Here are a couple things I think you should know:
- Two guitarists, one drummer. No singer, no bassist. - An unconventional formula, but it works for them.
- The two guitarists are also drummers, themselves. - These white boys sure got a lot of rhythm.
- A wide range of influences from Meshuggah, to Mr. Bungle, to Primus, to Behold…the Arctopus! - I’ve always been one to dislike a band that insists on staying true to one genre. But Slaggleberry’s heavy breakdowns and weird time signatures indicate they haven’t quite committed to anything. There’s a little something for everyone in there.
- They play live wearing masks and lab coats. - Probably their one big downfall. Dr. Slaggleberry shouldn’t need a dress-up schtick to get noticed.
Dr. Slaggleberry have yet to get a lot of notice here in the states, but if you’re a fan of any of the Colin Marston bands or Psyopus…they’re definitely worth checking out. Math metal just never seems to get old for me.
