2010 SO FAR….AND ALL THAT JAZZ

Good GOD, everyone. We’re only about a month and a half into 2010 and I’m already up to my eyes in new releases. I’ve been listening/sampling to as much as I possibly can, and about 98% of it has been total crap. I do not give a crap about the new Fear Factory…unless Dino is going to eat a copy of it, or something.
So what am I diggin’ thus far? Well, for whatever reason, all my recent favz have had some sort of weird jazzy element to them. Am I just surrendering to a trend? Is this all my ears are in the mood for? Or is this really all that’s good lately? Yeah, I’ll go with that. Here’s what’s up for me lately…as far as I’m concerned.
- Ihsahn - After: Yup, so everyone’s been yappin’ about the new Ihsahn album lately…and I might as well chime in because it rulez. After is black metal’s answer to Kenny G, and it’s friggin’ beautiful. Listen to that sax at the 4:15 mark. ::gushes:: Also, all threemembers of the RiB clan are diggin’ this…and that doesn’t happen very often.
- Sigh - Scenes From Hell: I really wasn’t expecting to like this at all. I think the weird ass video was throwing me off. Lots of horns on this album. It’s basically just retarded. So uhhh…close your eyes, and enjoy!
- Shining - Blackjazz: I have yet to actually get my hands on this, but from what I’ve heard of it so far, I’m just giddy. Apparently, the same sax player plays on this as Ihsahn’s album. Good for that guy. Make that money, yo. As someone who is often sick of metal that’s just, uhhh…metal, I’m stoked when avant-garde stuff like this comes out. Seems like the sort of thing dance punk nerds could get behind, too.
So that’s all the jazzy jamz I’ve been into lately. I actually just listened to the new Rotting Christ right before writing this and dug that too, but…wouldn’t wanna break the theme of the post. Though I guess I just did.
What have you guys been listening to so far in 2010? Any rec’s?
-Elise
