NOT ALL METAL COVERS HAVE TO BE “BR00TAL”
Every day it seems like more and more metal bands are taking stabs at covers of ironic pop hits, or old school 80’s jams. But I also enjoy the opposite art: non-metal artists covering songs 80x heavier than they are. Many attempts are a bit laughable, but I think some come out pretty good.
The metal community tends to frown upon “non-metallers” invading their territory. Whether it’s scene bands covering metal/classic rock hits, or just the mere fact that someone like Ryan Adams wants to make a “metal” album…someone always flips. I just sit back and laugh. I’m always interested to hear what people come up with, good or bad.
Here are some of my personal favorites:
.
Jimmy Eat World - “Firestarter” (Prodigy): I love how the “kings of emo” managed to make Prodigy sound….sad. Are you all done crying now? Let’s continue…
.
Bit Shifter - “Angelfuck” (The Misfits): I’ll admit this is probably the ridiculous thing in the world, but I love it anyway. This is just one song off a recent Misfits 8-bit cover release. It’s probably my favorite one. Download the whole thing for free: here.
.
Tori Amos - “Raining Blood” (Slayer): Damn girl, you need a hug.
.
Pitchshifter - “St. Anger” (Metallica): This might be the only I’m including that you’ll all think is better than the original. FRANTIC TICK TICK TICK …
.
And I’ll leave you with this:
