BECAUSE METAL AND HORROR OFTEN GO HAND IN HAND…
BEST WORST MOVIE TRAILER from Best Worst Movie on Vimeo.
Ok, so this post doesn’t really cover any “metal.” But a lot of you dorks love your Star Wars, Star Trek, video games, or bloody slasher flicks…so this might be up your alley.
During my junior year of college, a friend of mine forced me to sit down and watch an old horror movie from 1990 called Troll 2, claiming it was “so bad, it’s amazing.” I was hesitant at first, but once I saw it…I was all over it. It’s hard to really do the movie justice when explaining the plot. But it’s essentially about a nice family who go on vacation to a town called Nilbog (“that’s Goblin spelled backwards!”), where the townspeople attempt to feed them green food so they’ll turn into plants and be eaten. It’s sort of a big, long allegory against vegetarianism. It has bad acting, bad writing, bad directing, etc. There are also no actual trolls in the movie (just goblins), nor does it have any connection to Troll 1. In other words: it’s a dream come true and I love it.
Anyway, in the Fall of 2006, I had heard that the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater here in New York was holding a Troll 2 screening/cast reunion. My friends and I went and had the time of our lives. We met the cast, bought t-shirts, and saw the WEIRDEST, MOST DEVOTED FANBOYS you could possibly imagine. Seriously, people came from all over the country for this. It was intense. It was that night that the film’s child star, Michael Paul Stephenson (who is now in his 30’s), first announced that he was making a documentary on the movie’s cult following/resurgence of popularity over the past few years. There were cameras all over the place, and I recall being filmed a number of times throughout the evening.
Fast forward to 2009, the documentary, called Best Worst Movie, was finally completed. For the past year or so since then, it’s been hitting the festival circuit pretty hard and gaining a lot of popularity. This past weekend, Best Worst Movie FINALLY opened here in New York (just at one theater), and I of course had to go see it immediately. The whole thing is simply adorable. It mostly follows star George Hardy, who is a dentist from a small town in Alabama, and how the film’s renewed “fame” has effected his life over the years. If you are a fan of Troll 2, Best Worst Movie essentially answers any questions you could have ever had about it. From…what was it like to film this? Or how did the role effect your acting career? To WHO THE FUCK WROTE THIS SHIT AND WHY??! And you’ll of course get to see a plethora of nutty fans Troll 2 has produced over the past two decades. I definitely saw a few metal tees thrown in there. Nerdz <3
But the real reason as to why Best Worst Movie is awesome…I’m in it! My friend (who was with me the night of the UCB event) saw it a few months ago and told me there was a clear shot of me that made it into the film. When I finally saw it on Sunday, I LITERALLY SHRIEKED in the middle of the theater when I saw myself on the big screen. I’m so oddly honored to be a part of the whole thing.
Check to see if Best Worst Movie is opening in a city near you, here. Even my friend (who has never seen Troll 2) liked it, so you might too! What’s your favorite bad/good movie? I’ve been meaning to see The Room, but is there anything else you guys would recommend?
I’ll get back to posting about m00zik tomorrow. :)
