LIKE THE OCEAN? YOU’LL LOVE BLESSID UNION OF SOULS!
One album that the metal militia has been buzzin’ about lately is The Ocean’s Heliocentric. I have yet to give it a proper listen, but I did hear the first three songs or so and wasn’t really feelin’ what I heard. Mostly because I think their singer kinda sucks, but the music seems ok, I guess.
Anyway, our beloved Angela G. was chit chatting with me about said album recently and asked if I had heard the song “Ptolemy Was Wrong.” I had not, so I gave it a go. She pointed out to me that the song reminded her a lot of the 1995 Top 40 hit “I Believe” by Blessid Union of Souls. Odd comparison, but I gotta say…she’s not too far off with this. The singing, the piano…it’s all there.
Here’s “Ptolemy Was Wrong:” (FF about halfway in)
And here’s “I Believe:”
Now, we’re not saying anyone ripped anyone else off. The two melodies are totally different, but just that the sound and feel of both songs are very similar. Mainly just the guy’s voice. Some people probably won’t hear it and think I’m just being a douche…but whatever. Anyway, it’s nice to see that some metal has a softer side, and could possibly be radio-worthy. But I definitely like BUOS’s song better. That shit was my jam back in the day. Now please, all of you go ahead and disagree with me. (I think I’m just trying to say I think The Ocean are gheeeey.)
