GWAR: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Last week, I saw my 5th GWAR show at non other than my local spot, The Westcott in Syracuse. Nowadays, it seems like every show I go to brings a new idea to my mind, a theory I’ve never thought of, or some kind of question to ponder. This time the question was: Can a show be both good AND bad?

The Good: I’ve never had so much fun in a pit. And this was the first time I was unaccompanied in a pit as well (Cause The Beardo was not down for it and chilled out in the back). Except for the one creeper who kept putting his hands around my waist and rubbing my back like he was my lover. I know we’ve gone over this before people, but it’s not ok. Contrary to what you may think, I WILL HIT YOU if touched inappropriately SO GET THE FUCK OFF.
Anyway, because I was alone I could just focus on jamming on however the fuck I wanted to and had a great time. And yes, I held my own just fine- just a couple little bruises. BFD
The Bad: Let’s face it- the dudes it GWAR are getting old. However, that’s no excuse to repeat the last tour. I kid you not, from the 10 minute intro video to the set list to the killing of Michael Jackson and Barack Obama, the show was EXACTLY the same as when I saw them in New York in December. First time that’s ever happened.
The Ugly: Getting back to mosh pit etiquette, let’s review:
- If someone goes down, pick them up
- No closed fists, no elbows
- If you push/shove/punch/kick don’t get tough when someone pushes/shoves/punches/kicks back.
- No molesting people you don’t know. Save it for your own significant other.
So basically, considering that the show itself was kinda blah… but I had an awesome night regardless… I left really pretty good, but a little perplexed. I suppose I’ve been to a lot of shows that were more fun because of the company I had rather than the bands that’ve played, but it one thing more important that the other? When you go to shows are you more concerned about how good the BAND is, or the level of overall FUN?
