YOUNGSTERS HAVE NO DAMN CLUE WHO THE HELL TOM MORELLO IS
You’ve probably noticed there’s been quite a bit of Warped Tour talk round these parts lately. Well, the people of Warped Tour were very nice to us this Summer, so I for one am glad to give them a big ups. And while scene kids tend to send many of you into fits of rage, they certainly offend me a lot less than the Confederate flag-waving crowd at Mayhem Fest. So as far as Summer festival tours go…YAY WARPED TOUR.
Anyway, you guys may or may not know who Tiffany Mink is. She was the official Warped Tour pit blogger for the Summer. I’ve been keeping up with her a bit over the past few weeks. During the tour’s stop in San Diego, I see this:
….oy.
I was surprised when I found out that Tom Morello’s new(er)-ish band Street Sweeper Social Club played two of the dates in southern California. They don’t really “fit in” with the rest of the bands, but also…it’s Tom Morello, he’s too “cool” to do stuff like this right? Wrong. Because most of kids legit have no idea who he even is anyway. Now, given I’ve never been much of a Rage Against the Machine fan, and I definitely don’t care too much for Street Sweeper Social Club. (Srsly?) But if someone was all, HEY, TOM MORELLO IS PLAYING ON THAT STAGE OVER THERE! and the only other band playing at the moment on another stage was Whitechapel or whatever….I’d probably be kinda stoked to go and watch him.
But I bring this up not to make fun of poorly musically educated children. They don’t have to like Rage Against the Machine. Kids gotta like what they like. (Your love of music shouldn’t feel like school, anyway.) But now I’m wondering if there is some sort of cut-off in age as to when Tom Morello is seen as somewhat of a “rocker celebrity.” I mean, there have been plenty of times when people I know that are 10+ years older than me make a reference to something and I have no idea what they’re talking about. So is Tom Morello now one of *those* things to most kids who are 10 years younger than me? Guys….am I old? I did just turn 25, which is basically 40 in girl years. Is it starting?
All dramatics aside, Morello and Boots at least seemed to have a sense of humor about the situation in the video below. Fast forward to the 1 min mark to hear the guys crack a couple (harmless) jokes about emo kids:

P.S. Tom Morello is still hot.
