Holy bejeez, you guys. Is it really the end of August already? Not that I’m too upset about that. Anyone that knows me knows I hate this stupid season. Is there really anything even remotely appealing about the hottest/stickiest/bug bite-iest time of year when you don’t have any kind of access to a pool? At least my job has freezing cold air conditioning. Pretty much the only thing I like about going to it. But I can’t deny that Summer can often be a special time that we look back on and siiiiiigh. I must admit, this one wasn’t too bad. Here’s a couple things I’ve been reflecting on:

I went and checked out the Weedeater/Black Tusk/Gates of Slumber tour here in New York on Saturday, and wasn’t really expecting much. These stoner shows usually aren’t my thing…mostly because I feel like the number of people there who would have showered in the past 24 hours can be counted on just one hand. And oh yeah…the whole “weed” thing. Well…it’s Weedeater, after all. But I don’t smoke weed, and have no desire to start. What are you gonna do?
So after nodding off during The Gates of Slumber, I got the sugar shot I needed in the form of Savannah’s Black Tusk. I’ve heard so many good things about this band a countless number of times, yet never bothered to listen to them. And now I see what all the fuss was about. This is some pretty fierce sludge, and dare I say…catchy? They’re fun as hell, and looked like they were having the time of their lives. It actually looked like their guitarist and bass player were going to make out at some point during the set…but it didn’t happen. Sometimes these dudes just get caught up in the moment of rawwwk, I guess.
And how were Weedeater, you ask? Uhhhh….well, Dixie Dave drank some sizzurp (that was taped to the wall), gave us the ol’ crazy eyes, and managed to throw up right there on the stage. They’re a hoot. I appreciate them more as people, than for their music…that’s for sure.
Anyway, Black Tusk’s new album Taste the Sin will be out May 25th via Relapse. One new jam, “Embrace the Madness” has already been posted on their MySpace. Definitely worth checking out.
