Reign in Blonde [noun; plural] - Two tall, blonde chicks who bring the metal. We're not know-it-alls, and we don't 'report' unbiasedly. This is our blog where we simply discuss what's on our brutal minds. Bon Appetit.
I just found this picture over on the Best Week Ever blog…and as much as I understand that it might be fun to dress up your little one as a miniature metal “you”…certain “accessories” are just a little excessive.
Aww, don’t cry baby. At least we know mommy got the book on sale! I hope she’s a Borders member.
I only just now found out that Weezer has a cover of “War Pigs” that they’ve been playing on some recent tours. It’s not bad….not bad at all actually. I knew Rivers was a metal fan, but this is pretty awesome.
Oh yeah, I’m about to get technical on your ass. Not technical like mathcore, but technical in the “intro to music theory” sense. One of the musical elements that makes metal “creepy” and dark is the wonderful little tritone. For those of you who may not have studied music, behold the prime example: Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath”
Ok class, so a tritone is the musical interval you hear above. It’s the same as an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th, also known as “the Devil’s note.” Way back when, composers weren’t allowed to compose pieces with this interval because the powers that were believed that it invoked the devil. Terrifying, really. Nonetheless, perfect for Halloween. Hope it gets you in the mood, freaks. IT’S SABBATH for crissakes…
I know what you’re thinking. Another stupid HA HA metal-related video found on Youtube. Is this guy just showin’ off? Or is he trying to be….metaphorical?
Once again, it’s Wussy Wednesday, and this week you can call me a wuss all you want, but I love this stuff.
One of my favorite non-metal bands is The Cardigans. You may not have heard of them, but they’re best known for the song “Lovefool” from Romeo + Juliet in the 1990’s, and if you’ve ever watched old MTV Cribs, you’ve probably also heard “My Favourite Game” from time to time. They’re one of the few bands from my childhood that I still actively listen to and like, so they get brownie points for that, but, The Cardigans aren’t really the most metal band out there… or so they want us to believe.
First Band on the Moon (the album with “Lovefool”) came out in 1996, so I was about 8 or 9 when I got it as a gift for a 100% on a spelling test. At the time, I didn’t really know much about Black Sabbath, so I didn’t know that their cover of “Iron Man” was in fact… a cover. Years later of course, I put the two together. As it may be, it seems that my favorite non-metal Swedish rockers have sort of a penchant for Black Sabbath because they also do a cover of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” on 1995’s Life and a cover of “Changes” at live shows. Not the band you would expect to do such a thing, but the completely non-brutal way they redo these classics is freakin’ AWESOME.
So really, maybe I’m just the wuss this week. Eh, what else is new.
