Reign in Blonde [noun; plural] - Two tall, blonde chicks who bring the metal. We're not know-it-alls, and we don't report the news. This is our blog where we simply discuss what's on our brutal minds. Bon Appetit.
I find that most metalheads aren’t that into sports. Truth be told, I’m not that into sports either, but I do like college football and basketball- It helps when your college team is actually good at them (we’re still working on the football though; baby steps.)
Since I try to go to as many SU games as I can, I’ve noticed that both sports have their metal moments, but one sport comes out on top as the most brutal college game.
As you know, I’m quite fond of Central New York because of my college days at Syracuse University. LAMBGOAT posted the following earlier today:
Details regarding this year’s New Years Day show in Syracuse, New York have been announced. The all-ages event will take place at The Lost Horizon on Friday, January 1st at 2pm. Tickets are $18 in advance and the following performances are scheduled:
Death Threat Trapped Under Ice Black SS Forfeit Down To Nothing Cruel Hand Maximum Penalty Naysayer The Helm Oak & Bone Violent Side Born Low Unfinished Business
While I think it’s pretty cool that there’s a metal show in Syracuse for New Year’s, the lineup is pretty disappointing. Let’s face it- does anyone recognize any of these bands? Recently the ‘Cuse has welcomed some pretty familiar faces like Otep, In This Moment, Throwdown and Walls of Jericho. Metallica and Lamb of God just rolled through nearby Elvira, NY. So… wtf yo. It’s an area with a pretty decent scene, and I vote that for New Year’s Day, they need an upgrade!
Last but not least from me, the one and only Living Dead Girl. Halloween-y? Check. Special? Check.
Rob Zombie has a lot of great Halloween songs, so it was hard to just single one out. BUT, Living Dead Girl was the “theme” to my college radio show and so it holds a special little space in my heart. Aw. Those were the days…
I’ve mentioned that one of my favorite things about fall is the football/beer combo. It’s not that I don’t care about the NFL (alright… maybe I don’t care about the NFL) but it’s that I’m more interested in the NCAA. I’ve been to a couple SU football games this year, and each time have been amazed by the music selection being showcased in the Dome. I guess they call it “The Loud House” for a reason. Don’t get too excited, they’re not exactly blasting Pig Destroyer while reviewing plays, but nonetheless college football can actually be pretty brutal. Injuries, especially. At games I’ve heard:
“Welcome to the Jungle” Guns N’ Roses
“We’re Not Gonna Take It” Twisted Sister
“Cum On Feel The Noize” Quiet Riot
“Enter Sandman” Metallica
Not that shocking, but one song choice that kinda is? “Not Going Away” by Ozzy Osbourne.
I’ve heard “Crazy Train” too, but who knew that sports fanatics were jammin out to new Ozzy as well! Get it. Now let’s keep up this trend. Next game let’s get my favorite pump up song, “Walk” in the mix.
I’m going to the SU vs. Louisville game IN Kentucky in November… think they headbang as much in the South? We shall see…
This weekend I’ll be heading back to my alma mater (again) for homecoming. GO ORANGE :)
Therefore, this week for Wussy Wednesday I wanted to really delve into my college past- well, what I can remember of it. Ahhh, to be young and get away with binge drinking at noon on a Thursday…
For some reason, my roommate Jenny would often get her buzz on and blast Crossfade’s “Cold.” And first it was just another song, but it quickly became a house anthem if you will. I’ll never be quite sure as to why- it’s not really a party-starter and it was never that big of a hit song, but oddly enough it got our motors running.
I spose it’s not a bad song for football season anyway. I can get my tailgate on to it. It sure ain’t no “Walk” though…
I don’t know if I’m totally behind and out of the loop on this, but apparently there is something called a “Metal Frat” at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Basically, it’s a big ass house that puts on shows all the time. It’s not so strange, considering I went to a college that was pretty big on basement shows….but I’ve never heard of an entire frat devoted to such a thing. This probably isn’t school-sanctioned, is it? The video above is a band called The Swellers doing a cover of Nirvana’s “Lithum.” Looks pretty fun!
This tip comes to me from my cousin, the most brutal Biggie fan I know. As I am a recent college grad, I can tell you that I had to take some pretty awful classes in my four year run (ECONOMICS. WHY?), but I also had my fair share of good ones. But if I could’ve taken a class on Guitar Hero, I would’ve shredded your asses and gotten an A+++! Sound ridiculous? Well, it’s not.
This fall, NYU is offering a course entitled “Guitar Heroes (and Heroines): Music, Video Games and the Nature of Human Cognition.” I wonder if there is a lab component involved? Can you use star power to score extra credit? Is the final exam playing “Freebird” on Expert? Well, IT SHOULD BE. This almost makes me want to NYU to get my masters… well, almost.
Have I mentioned my love for Jager? WELL, I love it.
If you’ve ever been to a bar in your life, you most likely seen one of these:
Pretty cool, no complaints about it. You can even get one of your own! That is, if you feel like spending MAD dollars on something that… pours. Although, it’s still a little pricey, behold a much BETTER alternative: The Jagermeister COOLER
GLORIOUS. There are so many pluses to this thing that I’m almost willing to pay $120 for it.
It holds way more Jager than the tap, PLUS whatever you want to mix it with- red bull, cranberry juice, yoo-hoo…
It’s perfect to take with you wherever you go, and if you’re a hunter it’ll go perfectly with all your gear!
And if wherever you go is a sporting event, (i.e. football game) it’s PERFECT for tailgating!
AND IF YOU’RE TAILGATING AT A SYRACUSE FOOTBALL GAME, IT’S ALREADY ORANGE! GO CUSE!
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. It’s metal to have school spirit!
I finally got my hands on Do The Devil’s Work For Him- for some odd reason it was very hard to find in stores so I had to order it from Amazon- and basically…
IF YOU’RE READING THIS RIGHT NOW AND WANT TO WORK IN THIS MUSIC INDUSTRY, BUY. THIS. BOOK.
I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Sciarretto at the Metal Insiders Summit this past April and in addition to being extremely accomplished, she is also honest and down to earth (both in the book and in person). I could go on and on about this book, but here’s the short on why you should read it:
First of all, it’s an easy read. I finished it in a day. Can’t ask for more than that.
It’s not the same cliche shit you hear from everyone. It’s chock full of tips that will actually help you in your quest of metal industry domination. Even the common sense stuff is good advice that you need to be reminded of.
I learned what a “solid” is. Again, good to know.
The book is especially useful for college students. There’s a lot of stuff in there that I wish someone would’ve told me when I was a freshmen, so the younger you are, the more you should read it. My only critique is that it’s mostly focused towards journalism, but still, most of the advice is universal. For Gods sake, there’s no reason to not read it so just GO FORTH and do it already!
Elise will be holding down the RiB fort for the next two weeks, as I will be on tour with the SU Hendricks Chapel Choir (I’m a nerd, I know) in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. 6 concerts in two weeks, and I’ll be back in New York on May 25th.
I’m not abandoning you all, just won’t be able to get to a computer (most likely. I’ll post if I can!)
