Reign in Blonde [noun; plural] - Two tall, blonde chicks who bring the metal. We're not know-it-alls, and we don't report the news. This is our blog where we simply discuss what's on our brutal minds. Bon Appetit.
I was cruising the YouTubez recently when I randomly came across this video of a couple kids covering Skeletonwitch’s “Repulsive Salvation.” Needless to say, it’s not very good. (Especially the drummer.) But check out the cute wittle pooch just chillin’ there on the floor as if nothing is going on around him. Could he be any more disinterested?
It’s been long ass time since I’ve had a pet. (I developed allergies in my early 20’s. Weird, huh?) Do any of you have dogs? How do they react to your music?
I have a bone to pick with the people over at Google Maps. Me and some kids made our way out to the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale for the big Cannibal Corpse Evisceration Plague tour this past Sunday, and were lead astray by the usually trusty Google Maps app on our iPhones. According to those dbags, THIS IS WHERE THE CRAZY DONKEY IS. Does that look like a venue to you guys? No? That’s because it’s someone’s house. On a dead end street. Ugh.
We finally figured out where the hell we were going in time to see Skeletonwitch Snugglewitch plays about 40% of their last song. Damnit. Curse you, Google Maps. But we were at least in time for 1349, who were making their big debut on this tour after being held up by that big stupid doo doo head volcano in Iceland. For once I felt like I could relate to these guys….ya know, the whole struggling to reach our destination thing. Hmm…what else do we have in common? Well….we’re all white, and we all breathe oxygen, and uhhhh….I’m out. At any rate, they sounded pretty good, and Ravn (who I recently interviewed here) seems to be in pretty good shape. Maybe he’s been Master Cleansing.
Here’s a clip from Youtube of 1349 playing one of the new jams:”When I Was Flesh.”
Their new album Demonoir is out now. Check out the remaining dates on their MySpace.
February 18th, 2010. Twas a wonderful night indeed. Before they jumped on stage to rip the faces off of the many little heathens in the crowd, Scott Hedrick and Nate Garnett sat down with me to have a little chat about boozin’, sandwiches, why they’re such an awesome band, and of course- Demi Lovato.
Instead of a long interview to read (which would be silly, this is called a “quickie” after all), we’re tryin’ something new here at RiB: AUDIO! So, if you want to hear what was said, exactly how we said it, just go ahead and press play, sit back, and chill for 15 minutes. And try not to make fun of my incessant laughter, k? ENJOY!
AWWWWWW YEAHHHH BOIIIII *cough* I mean, uh… yeah, so let’s recap:
2/18/10- Valentine’s, Albany NY: If I could sum up this show in one sentence, it would be this- Sometimes you’ve gotta take the bad with the good. There were four bands on the bill: HOWL, Iron Age, Planet Eater, and of course, Skeletonwitch and out of all the shows I’ve been to in my life, I’ve never seen the two extremes of the likability scale come together like that. Let’s say it was like month-old moldy meat in between two of the freshest, most delicious, warm, wonderful pieces of bread you’ve ever tasted. Imagine that for a second people, and let’s move on to what I’m really talking about here…
A few months ago, you all shat your pants when you found out some “kiddie star” named Demi Lovato name-dropped a bunch of metal bands on Jimmy Fallon. As a tween fan, this simultaneously left me excited and indifferent, because it was like WOW DEMI LIKES METAL!!!! But OHH SHE LIKES DUMB SHIT!!!!! (Abigail Williams, Job For a Cowboy, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster). Gross. Anyway…it turns out I have a little more in common with this little Latina than I thought. According to this tweet: she’s down wit da ‘Witch.
While the rest of the metal community moans and groans yet again about “false,” “non-metalers” invading their space, I shall sit here and giggle with delight. Demi…you are the most metal of tweens, and I salute you. I wonder how many of her little fans checked out Skeletonwitch’s MySpace after reading that and promptly hid under their covers.
Well since we’re on the topic… Most of you know what a mega tween geek I am (did you guys see my post on Stuff You Will Hate a few weeks ago?), andddd that I’m a huge fan of Disney XD’s newest hit show I’m in the Band (WEEEASEL ROOCK YOU!), allow me to familiarize y’all with some of Demi’s best work. After all, she likes what you guys like!
Skeleton. Witch. Yes. I think of any band I’ve become familiar with through interviews, these dudes are one of my favorites. They seem like such super funny and sweet guys.
They picked the perfect time of year to release their new album, Breathing the Fire, which just came out yesterday. It pretty much oooozes evil. It’s (Halloween) candy for my ears.
Lots of great albums have come out this year, but I’ve also been liking a lot of the album art, too. You know me, guys. I’m all about aesthetics. So let’s throw down in some useless competition:
Which is more brutal? Revocation’s Existence is Futile or Skeletonwitch’s Breathing the Fire?
And who wore it better in the “pretty” category? Mastodon’s Crack the Skye or Baroness’ Blue Record?
Holy f’ing shit you guys. I’ve previously mentioned on here my love for baking and how I wanted to devise a recipe for ‘Black Metal Cake,’ (or really any metal sub genre). Well, guess what? IT EXISTS!
Metalcakes is a baking blog ran by a lovely lady by the name of Kathy Bejma from Chicago. She creates cupcake recipes inspired by all of her favorite bands including: Mercyful Fate, The Sword, Celtic Frost, Motorhead, Danzig, Iron Maiden, Mastodon, etc. These Judas Priest ones are pretty stunning if you ask me:
What makes this even more adorable is how she refers to her ingredients as ‘Metal Constituents’ and her directions as ‘Merciless Instructions.’ GAHHH THIS IS SO AWESOME! She’s even baked for Skeletonwitch:
If any of you metal dudes have a birthday coming up, I’ll be sure to hit up Kathy’s blog and make a br00tal confection for you. Do yourself a favor and check out Metalcakes. Follow Kathy on Twitter, too! [via Cupcakes Take the Cake.]
