Reign in Blonde [noun; plural] - Two tall, blonde chicks who bring the metal. We're not know-it-alls, and we don't report the news. This is our blog where we simply discuss what's on our brutal minds. Bon Appetit.
You know me, I’m down with my fellow female metal-ists. But, I came across this atrocity on the interwebs a couple days ago and it’s still giving me nightmares. No need to watch the whole thing, the first 60 seconds will give you the idea just fine. I’m a fan of the awkward “Simon Says” clapping in the beginning myself…
Shania Twain was the guest judge on American Idol last night, and it felt like I traveled straight back to 1997….because after all these years, that woman is STILL wearing those stupid long coats. Remember this little number from the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” video?
After a couple minutes, I remembered someone else who likes to dress like she’s in the trenchcoat mafia: Tarja Turunen.
Wouldjja look at thaaat. Ain’t they cute? She’s a little bit country…she’s a little bit rock n roll. I think this calls for a swap meet!
-Elise
P.S. I didn’t even attach the video, but you totally have that Shania song in your head now, don’t you?
What the hell is going on in the tour universe? First we had the strange (but still alright) Satyricon lineup for the fall, and now this:
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, SHADOWS FALL, OTEP, 2 CENTS
Five Finger Death Punch (ehh)
Shadows Fall (I’d dig it)
Otep (The opposite of 5FDP?)
2 Cents (…who?)
Seriously, who is putting these shows together? Are we just sticking band names in a hat and pulling them out at random? How about we do Throwdown, Gorgoroth, Tarja, and Ill Nino? Or perhaps Dethklok, Metallica, Walls of Jericho, and Genghis Tron?
Tarja Turunen, the Finnish singer best known for getting the boot from her band, Nightwish, for acting too ‘big time,’ played a show last night here in New York with her new back-up band. She is currently touring the states in support of the re-release of her solo album, My Winter Storm. Based on the video above, it appears that she still performs Nightwish songs live.
Anyway, onto the real reason I wanted to post this…..Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to sound like a hater or anything. Tarja sings like an angel and her body is SLAMMIN’ but……doesn’t she kinda look like she fucking REEKS? I mean….she doesn’t appear particularly dirty or anything, and the armpits are shaven, but I somehow doubt that she’s left room in the band budget for Lady Speed Stick. I get a vibe. Is it just me? If you or anyone you know has ever caught a whiff of her, please pass along the information. I need to know.
Post-Tarja Nightwish just so happens to be playing in New York this Saturday, just three days later. What a coinkydink. For the record, Anette doesn’t really strike me as fresh & clean kinda gal either.
I am all for this ‘women in metal’ thing, but I get frustrated with these chicks who seem so lifeless when they perform. This video for Nightwish’s “Amaranth” is a good example. What’s with Anette? Is she bored? She’s barely doing anything. Her bandmates are so much more animated than she is. It’s like she has a very small bag of tricks including:
Step forward,
Squint,
Bop Head,
Hips left,
Hips right,
Side Step,
Cross side step,
Jazz hands,
You get the idea.
Anyway…for the record, I have been on the fence about Nightwish as a whole for a while. They have a few good, catchy songs like “Amaranth,” “Wishmaster,” “Over The Hills and Far Away,” and “Nemo.” But songs like “Bye Bye Beautiful” and “Wish I Had an Angel,” amongst others, are pretty much unbearable.
Also, like Julia, I don’t hate on Anette. I think she sings well and manages to keep the older songs alive. However, I think she makes the band a little less….special. Her voice is definitely more pop that Tarja’s high soprano vocals. While this might not make the band less “metal,” it does tend to stray them away from that whole symphonic territory.
Then again….what do I know? ::Shrug:: If any of you are interested in my Anette dance lessons, please let me know.
It looks like after Anette had her breakdown on stage in Brazil (I don’t hate, get it Anette) she has decided to hire her own management. I don’t really see how the two correlate, but whatever. Oddly enough, it’s the same management team as one of my favorite non-metal (and very underrated) bands, The Cardigans.
Just please please PLEASE, don’t go the way of Tarja and become some kind of hoopty ass diva. That girl can sing, but she is CRAZY.
