Reign in Blonde [noun; plural] - Two tall, blonde chicks who bring the metal. We're not know-it-alls, and we don't report the news. This is our blog where we simply discuss what's on our brutal minds. Bon Appetit.
Some of you may have heard about a festival that went on last weekend in NJ called The Bamboozle. It’s basically a lot of neon scenepunk bands, and stuff like Paramore or Weezer. But there were some surprises thrown in there this year like Drake, MGMT, and my fav…Ke$ha! Woot. I’d totally go to it. In fact, I did a few years ago. But nowadays I usually don’t feel like paying for it….or traveling to NJ, so…no dice. Anyway, in recent years, The Bamboozle started doing this thing where the day before the ACTUAL festival, they do this other thing called the Hoodwink Festival where bands do entire sets of another bands’ songs. Most of you probably already heard about how Emmure did up the Rage Against the Machine jams, and we all know how much you kids hate Emmure, so I won’t bother getting into it. But a couple other groups I happen to like participated in this schtick too, and I was stoked to see that they had picked other bands I like for their sets. Here’s what we got:
A band called Say Anything took on the Misfits. And as much as I like Say Anything for being what may be the last good pop/punk band around today, I was a little disappointed in how this Hoodwink set turned out. Covering the Misfits is nothing new, plenty of bands have done it before. But I see it as somewhat of an EXPERIENCE to do so. You gotta get the fuck into to. Get into character. Max Bemis isn’t really bringing any new life to these songs, so he might as well Danzig it up. Or maybe just dress in costume…? Rock the devilock or SOMETHING. …no? Ok fine. Since most of you probably aren’t going to dig this, I invite you to check out Say Anything’s song “Hate Everyone.” It’s catchy as fuck.
The internet has been buzzing about this for the past couple days and I’m SO HAPPY there is actually video of it. Indie rock superstar Ted Leo played a show in Philadelphia on Halloween as Glenn Danzig with the band TV Casualty as his backup “Misfits.” I’ve heard of people doing this before but holy shit this is awesome.
I’ve liked Ted Leo for quite some time. He’s one of those non-douchey indie types. I’ve seen him live before and really enjoyed myself. But when he busted into “Hybrid Moments” at the 3:35 mark on this, a tear of joy almost ran down my face. I wish I could have been there. More video here.
Alright, I know I’ve been heavy on the Misfits mentions lately. Don’t worry, I’m not going to start a MISFITS MONDAYS or anything. But perhaps some of you will be interested in this new compilation I just stumbled upon of Misfits songs done 8-bit style. My first reaction was ::face palm::, but I’m not going to lie to you people…it’s not so terrible. A few of the songs are kind of boring, but the best ones are the covers of “London Dungeon,” “I Turned Into a Martian,” and “Hybrid Moments.” All very worthy of a Danzig-themed video game. Right now, I’m picturing that shirtless/muscle-y man running through a haunted house.
Unfortunately, I can’t embed anything right here, but you can download the whole album, Eightbreeders (tee hee, get it?) for FREE at this location.
Of course, no Halloween mix is complete without a little Misfits. I’ve always considered “Skulls” to be the most cutesy and romantic of any one of their songs. (However morbid that might be.) So this one goes out to you, readers. I love each and every one of you sooo much. I’m going to collect all your little heads and put ‘em on my wall. <3
Is it just me? Or do some images of Michael Jackson (especially this weird cross stitch thing) kind of remind you of old school Glenn Danzig? I’m not sure if either party would appreciate such a comparison…
Well, here we are, folks. Laboy Day weekend is finally upon us, marking the ‘unofficial’ end of Summer. GOOD RIDDANCE YOU WRETCHED, WRETCHED SEASON. I will not even for a moment miss the excessive sweaty-ness or all the bugs chewing up my legs, because FALL F’ING RULES. The leaves turn lots of pretty colors (because they’re dying \m/), I can bust out my scarves and my boots, and I can once again consume all-things pumpkin.
As this glorious season approaches, I find myself already getting into the Halloween spirit. The majority of my music listen-age these past few days has been The Misfits. A Fall/Halloween without them would be pretty sacrilegious for me.
Fall is already shaping up pretty well this year. I’m looking forward to hearing new Skeletonwitch, Slayer, HORSE the Band and Baroness. How ‘bout y’all?
Anyway, I wish you all a fantastic weekend. I usually go upstate and hang out with my family, but since they’ve all jetsetted elsewhere this year, I’ll just be bummin’ around town. Suggest a new album for me to listen to? Or a Halloween costume….?
